With the support of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, in March 2018 we designed and facilitated a workshop for educators on reading Jewell Parker Rhodes's middle grade novel Ghost Boys with students. Nearly twenty educators from New York City and beyond gathered in the South Bronx (and remotely) to explore their own responses to this haunting book and to collaboratively explore strategies, approaches, and resources for engaging young people with it. The highlight of the afternoon was when Jewell herself joined us via videoconference to discuss the novel with us and answer teachers' questions.
We were honored when Jewell then asked us to help develop the educator guide for Ghost Boys. It was a thrill and a pleasure to collaborate with her, her amazing researcher Steve Jozef, and a team of extraordinarily talented and thoughtful educators. We hope this educator guide is helpful for any educators considering introducing this vital novel to their students.
