Since Boogie Down Storytime moved online on March 20, 2020, we've hosted more than 60 storytime events on Zoom for over 1200 readers who have joined us for joyful, interactive reading experiences with authors, educators, and other volunteers, including Cedella Marley, daughter of Bob and Rita Marley; Julián is a Mermaid author and illustrator Jessica Love; and former NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. We know how much storytime means to our community, and we need your help to keep it going.
As a small business, our core values have always been joy, justice, and community, which means that we value people and principles alongside profits. Because we're a business that prioritizes doing good work in the community, we hold ourselves accountable for fairly compensating the team members who make that good work possible. During the pandemic, we've increased our online programming and added movement with Bronx yoga teacher Jazy Cintron to the storytime experience. Unfortunately, like so many independent bookstores, our book sales and school partnerships have decreased because of the shutdown and the economic downturn. In order to keep doing our work in the way we believe is right–like hosting storytime and incorporating yoga to develop motor skills alongside a lifelong love of reading–we're offering you more ways to show your support.
Online access to Boogie Down Storytime via Zoom will continue to be available every week as usual, but a new registration process will be in effect starting with our October 31 event. Registration will take place through Eventbrite, and you'll be able to choose between purchasing the featured storytime book, paying the full suggested amount of $5 per family, or making a contribution in any amount starting at $1. You'll need to register for each individual Saturday separately, but you can do so in one sitting. A unique Zoom link will be sent to registered families each week. To register for upcoming events, please visit our storytime website.
We love having you in our Boogie Down Storytime community, and it's absolutely essential to us that you understand these changes and the reasons behind them. If you have any questions, concerns, or other feedback you'd like to share please reach out to us at any time via email or phone: (347) 916-6234.
